The Yost Tavern: A Historic Building
A Busy Inn in Early Ohio
Abraham Yost built this tavern in 1805. He lived there and ran his business. The tavern was in a great spot along the main road to Cincinnati. This helped his business grow a lot.
Just four years later, in 1809, many people were traveling toward Columbus. This made the tavern even more popular. Customers bought many supplies, showing how busy and important the inn was.
From Inn to Home and Back to the City
After Abraham Yost, the building became a private home. White Miller bought it in 1870. His family lived there until 1968.
Then, the local Kiwanis club bought the property. They gave some old items from the tavern to a historical society. In 1979, the club gave the tavern building to the city of Montgomery.
What Does It Look Like?
The Yost Tavern has a simple design. It has a pointed roof at the front, which is called a gable-front. There's also a smaller section at the back.
The building has two floors. On the front, you can see a door and a window on the first floor. There are two more windows on the second floor. Another door is on the side. The outside walls are made of wooden boards, and the roof is metal. The building sits on a strong stone base.
A Special Historic Place
In 1993, the Yost Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important building in the history of the community.
It is one of five places in Montgomery on this special list. The others are the Blair House, the Montgomery Saltbox Houses, the Universalist Church Historic District, and the Wilder-Swaim House. The city of Montgomery also calls the Yost Tavern a local landmark. Today, the building is used as an office for a company called WorkFlex Solutions LLC.
