The Montgomery Saltbox Houses are two old and special homes in Montgomery, Ohio, United States. They were built way back in 1800. These houses were made for some of the first families who started the city of Montgomery. These families traveled all the way from Montgomery, New York in 1795. This was right after an important agreement called the Treaty of Greenville was signed.
Even though one house is made of brick and the other is wood, they look very much alike. They are great examples of a style of house called "saltbox." This style is common in the northeastern United States. However, it's very rare to see houses like these in southwestern Ohio.
What is a Saltbox House?
A saltbox house is a traditional type of home. It has a long, sloping roof that goes down to the back. This shape looks a bit like the wooden boxes that salt used to be stored in, which is how it got its name! These houses often have two stories in the front and one story in the back. They are known for being simple and practical.
History of the Houses
The city of Montgomery was planned out along Cooper Road, which runs east to west. But today, not many old buildings are left on this street, except for the Saltbox Houses.
Later on, Columbus, Ohio became the state capital. Because of this, Montgomery Road, which runs north to south, became much busier. Most new buildings were built along this road instead. This is why the Saltbox Houses are some of the few original buildings left from the first plan of the community.
In 1987, both of these special houses were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical places in the United States. Being on this list helps protect them. The Montgomery Saltbox Houses are among five places in Montgomery that are listed on the Register. Other listed places include the Blair House, the Universalist Church Historic District, the Wilder-Swaim House, and the Yost Tavern.
