Young Giantess (born 1790, died 1811) was a famous British Thoroughbred racehorse. Even though she didn't win any of her five races, she became a very important broodmare. A broodmare is a female horse used for breeding. She gave birth to two amazing horses: Sorcerer, a successful father of many racehorses, and Eleanor, who won two of the biggest races, the Derby and the Oaks.
Meet Young Giantess: Her Early Life
Young Giantess was a beautiful bay (brownish-red) filly (a young female horse) born in 1790. She was bred by Sir Charles Bunbury, who also owned her. Her father was Diomed, a horse who had won the Epsom Derby. Diomed wasn't very successful as a father of racehorses in Britain. However, he was later sent to America where he became very famous for his children, including a horse named Sir Archy. Young Giantess's mother was named Giantess, and she was the tenth foal (baby horse) her mother had.
Young Giantess's Racing Days
Young Giantess, who didn't have a name yet, was supposed to race for the first time on April 16, 1793. This race was the Filly Stakes at Newmarket. But she was taken out of the race, and another horse named Caelia won.
Her first actual race happened in May at Epsom Downs. This was the important Oaks Stakes. She didn't place in this race, meaning she didn't finish in the top positions. Caelia won this race too. In July, Young Giantess raced against a horse named Cymbeline in the Prince's Stakes at Brighthelmstone and lost.
On the last day of that same race meeting, she lost a £50 race to two other horses. At Newmarket's first October meeting, she came in last out of three horses in a Handicap Sweepstakes. Her very last race was a special "match race" against a horse called Paynator, which she also lost.
Young Giantess: A Champion Mother

Even though Young Giantess didn't win races herself, she became an amazing mother for Sir Charles Bunbury. She gave birth to ten foals during her life. Many of her children became very famous racehorses or important parents themselves.
Here are some of her most famous children:
- Sorcerer – Born in 1796, this black male horse was a true champion. He won fifteen races, including a big one called the October Oatlands Stakes in 1800. Sorcerer also became a top father of racehorses, being named the best father in Britain three times! He had many famous children like Morel, Maid of Orleans, and Smolensko.
- Eleanor – Born in 1798, this bay female horse was incredibly successful. In 1801, she won both the Derby and the Oaks, which are two of the most important horse races. As a mother herself, she gave birth to a famous father horse named Muley.
- Julia – Born in 1799, this brown female horse didn't have many foals before she died in 1810. But one of her children was Phantom, who won the Derby and became a champion father of racehorses.
- Cressida – Born in 1807, this bay female horse became the mother of Priam. Priam won the Derby and was also a champion father. She also had a son named Antar, who won the 2000 Guineas race.
- Walton mare – Born in 1808, this chestnut female horse had a son named Nicolo, who won the 2000 Guineas. She also had a son named Langar, who became a father of racehorses.
Young Giantess sadly passed away in 1811 while giving birth to twin foals. Both of the baby horses also died.
