History of Younger Hall

Younger Hall was designed by an English architect named Paul Waterhouse. It was built between 1923 and 1929. The building was meant to be the graduation hall for the University of St Andrews. Its design mixes two cool styles: Neo-Classical and Art Deco. Neo-Classical means it looks like old Greek or Roman buildings. Art Deco is a style with lots of geometric shapes and rich decorations.

The building cost £90,000 to build. This was a lot of money back then! It was opened by Elizabeth, the Duchess of York. She later became Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The hall was a special gift. It was given by Dr James and Mrs Annie Younger. They lived close by at a place called Mount Melville.

Inside Younger Hall

The entrance area, called the foyer, is very fancy. It has beautiful grey and green marble decorations. The main concert hall has two levels of balconies. It also has a stage made of wood panels.

There is a special organ inside Younger Hall. It was built by Harrison & Harrison from Durham. This organ has two keyboards, called manuals. Younger Hall is also home to The Music Centre of the University of St Andrews. This center has eleven rooms for practicing, teaching, and rehearsing music. There is even a Music Technology Studio in the building.
