A Look Back: The School's Story

Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda, as it was first known, opened in 1988. It was created because more and more families wanted their children to have a Welsh-medium education in the area. It is still the only Welsh-medium secondary school in the Rhondda Valley.

Today, about 800 students attend the school. These students come from all over the Rhondda. They join from five Welsh primary schools:

  • Llyn-Y-Forwyn (from Ferndale)
  • Ynyswen (from Ynyswen)
  • Llwyncelyn (from Porth)
  • Bronllwyn (from Gelli)
  • Bodringallt (from Ystrad)

On September 1, 2017, the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council changed the school's name to Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda.

On TV! Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda in the Media

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda has been featured on Welsh television! The school appeared in a popular show called "Pam fi Duw?" on the S4C channel. Many people in the Rhondda Valley, both Welsh and English speakers, loved the show because it was filmed in a place they knew.

For seven weeks each year, the TV company HTV used the school campus for filming. About 200 students from the school even got to be extras in the show!

More recently, the school was on S4C again in a programme called "Cymer Fi." This show followed six students as they took on different challenges and tasks. The programme showed the students working on things like singing lessons, trying to stop smoking, dealing with behaviour issues, and chasing their rugby dreams.

Sporting Success: Rugby at Cwm Rhondda

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda has a strong history in rugby union. Many former students have gone on to play in professional Welsh leagues. Some students have even played at an international level for different age groups. For example, former student Geraint Morris played for the Welsh regional team, the Celtic Warriors, in the European Heineken Cup.

Three students from the school's sixth form (Geraint Evans, Liam H. Thomas, and Ashley Bateman) were chosen for the Wales Under 18 Rugby League squad. Evans and Bateman played against a team from the North of England in Manchester in November 2006. Geraint Evans also represented Wales Under 19 against Australia in November 2006.

Another former student, Sean Paul Rees, was selected for the Wales Under 17 Rugby Union squad. Will Grif John was also chosen for the Welsh rugby union Under 20s squad and later became a professional player for the Cardiff Blues team.
