School History
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda first opened its doors in 1988. It was created because more and more families in the area wanted their children to have a Welsh-medium education. This means that lessons are taught in Welsh.
The school is still the only Welsh-medium secondary school in the Rhondda Valley. About 800 students attend the school. These students come from all over the Rhondda area. They join from five different Welsh primary schools:
- Llyn-Y-Forwyn (from Ferndale)
- Ynyswen (from Ynyswen)
- Llwyncelyn (from Porth)
- Bronllwyn (from Gelli)
- Bodringallt (from Ystrad)
The school was originally called Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda. On September 1, 2017, the local council changed its name to Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda.
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda on TV
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda has been featured on Welsh television! The school appeared in a popular show called "Pam fi Duw?" on the S4C channel. Many people in the Rhondda Valley, both Welsh and English speakers, loved the show because it was set in a place they knew.
For seven weeks each year, the TV company HTV used the school campus for filming. Around 200 students from the school even got to be extras in the show!
More recently, the school was featured on S4C again in a programme called "Cymer Fi". This show followed six students as they took on different challenges and tasks. The programme showed the students working on things like singing, dealing with behaviour issues, and chasing their dreams in rugby.
Rugby at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda has a strong tradition in rugby union. Many former students from the school have gone on to play in Welsh rugby leagues. Some students have even played at an international level for different age groups.
For example, a former student named Geraint Morris played for a Welsh regional team called the Celtic Warriors. He even played in the European Heineken Cup, which is a big rugby competition.
In November 2006, three students from the school's sixth form (Geraint Evans, Liam H. Thomas, and Ashley Bateman) were chosen for the Wales Under 18 Rugby League squad. Geraint Evans and Ashley Bateman played against a team from the North of England in Manchester. Geraint Evans also represented Wales Under 19 against Australia in the same month.
Another former student, Sean Paul Rees, was selected for the Wales Under 17 Rugby Union squad. Will Grif John, also a former student, was chosen for the Welsh rugby union Under 20s squad and later became a professional player for the Cardiff Blues team.
