Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr is a secondary school in Gowerton, Swansea, Wales. It is a Welsh-medium school, which means that most subjects are taught in the Welsh language. Students usually attend from ages 11 to 19. The school first opened its doors in 1984.

In 2023, there were 1113 students at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr. About a quarter of these students came from homes where Welsh was spoken.

About the School

Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr is known for its strong connection to Welsh language and culture. It helps students learn and use Welsh in their daily school life. The school has several houses that students belong to, similar to teams. These houses are named Branwen, Caradog, Dylan, Gwenllian, Llyr, Olwen, Nudd, and Peredur.

Growing Pains and New Schools

By 2001, Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr was the only Welsh-speaking secondary school in Swansea. It became very popular, with over 1,000 students. However, the school buildings were originally designed for only 750 students. This meant the school was getting too crowded.

There were ideas to move the school to a different location. But parents and staff wanted to keep the school where it was. Because of this, a second Welsh-language school was built in Swansea. This new school is called Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe.

For example, 76% of students achieved good grades (A-C) in five or more of their GCSE exams. This places the school among the top 10% in Wales for these results. In Swansea, it is ranked as the best school for academic performance.

Sporting Success

The school also has successful sports teams. In 2015, the school's Rugby 1st XV team (which is the main rugby team for students under 18) won an important league. They won the Ospreys Under 18s School League by beating Gowerton Comprehensive School with a score of 23–21.
