About the School
Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr is known for its strong connection to Welsh language and culture. It helps students learn and use Welsh in their daily school life. The school has several houses that students belong to, similar to teams. These houses are named Branwen, Caradog, Dylan, Gwenllian, Llyr, Olwen, Nudd, and Peredur.
Growing Pains and New Schools
By 2001, Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr was the only Welsh-speaking secondary school in Swansea. It became very popular, with over 1,000 students. However, the school buildings were originally designed for only 750 students. This meant the school was getting too crowded.
There were ideas to move the school to a different location. But parents and staff wanted to keep the school where it was. Because of this, a second Welsh-language school was built in Swansea. This new school is called Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe.
