In 2001, Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr faced a challenge. It was the only Welsh-speaking secondary school in Swansea. The school was designed for 750 students but had over 1,000. This meant it was very crowded.
There were plans to move the school to a new site. However, parents and staff did not agree with this idea. Their protests led to a different solution. A second Welsh-language school, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, was opened in Swansea. This helped ease the crowding at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr.
