Yumeko Aizome (逢初 夢子, Aizome Yumeko), born on December 25, 1915, is a Japanese actress. She used to act in movies and on stage. Yumeko Aizome worked from 1930 to 1965. She appeared in over 115 films!

Early Life and Family

Yumeko Aizome was born as Yachiyo Yokoyama (横山 八千代, Yokoyama Yachiyo). Her birthplace was Inawashiro, a town in Fukushima, Japan.

Yumeko faced challenges early in her life. Her father passed away when she was only six months old. Later, when she was ten years old, her mother also died. After losing both parents, Yumeko gave her belongings to her uncle. She then moved to Tokyo with her older brother. There, she continued her elementary school education.

Yumeko Aizome's Acting Career

In July 1930, Yumeko Aizome decided to follow her dream. She left high school to join the Shochiku Kagekidan. This was a famous musical theatre group. Her very first role was playing a pirate in a play called merry-go-round.

First Movie Roles

Yumeko performed on stage for a while. Then, she made her first movie appearance in 1932. This film was Moth-eaten Spring, directed by Mikio Naruse. Sadly, this movie is now considered lost.

In early 1933, Yumeko Aizome appeared in a movie called Dragnet Girl. This film was directed by the famous Yasujirō Ozu. She worked with Ozu again in 1934. This second and final film with him was A Mother Should be Loved.

Starring in Our Neighbor, Miss Yae

In 1934, Yumeko Aizome also starred in another important film. It was called Our Neighbor, Miss Yae. She played the main character, Yaeko. In this movie, she acted alongside Yoshiko Okada.

Yumeko continued to appear in many movies throughout the 1930s and 1940s. She worked with other well-known directors like Hiroshi Shimizu and Heinosuke Gosho.

Later Films and Retirement

In 1947, Yumeko played a role in A Ball at the Anjo House. She was the sister of the character played by Setsuko Hara. In 1953, she had a smaller role in a movie called Epitome.

Yumeko Aizome stopped acting in 1955. However, she made one last movie appearance in 1965. This was in Kiri no Hata, directed by Yoji Yamada.

After Acting

In 1985, Yumeko Aizome was interviewed. She spoke about her time working on Our Neighbor, Miss Yae with her co-star Sanae Takasugi. The last time she was mentioned publicly was in 2002. At that time, she helped provide information for a book about old Japanese films.

Personal Life

In 1942, Yumeko Aizome married Masanori Yusa. He was a very talented freestyle swimmer. Masanori Yusa won two gold medals at the Olympic Games!

After getting married, Yumeko's married name became Yachiyo Yusa (遊佐 八千代). Yumeko and Masanori had a daughter together. Her name is Makoto Yusa, born on February 28, 1942. Makoto also became an actress, using the stage name Naoko Yusa (遊佐 ナオ子).
