What is Yunaska Island Like?
Yunaska Island has two main parts, both of which are volcanoes. There is a valley that runs between these two volcanic mountains.
The Western Volcano
The western part of Yunaska Island is made up of four old volcanoes. These volcanoes are called stratovolcanoes. They have been worn down over time by weather and other natural forces. There is also an area with small, cone-shaped hills made from volcanic ash and rocks. This western volcano has not erupted in modern history.
The Eastern Volcano
The eastern part of the island is a different type of volcano called a shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are wide and have gentle slopes, like a warrior's shield. This eastern volcano has two large, bowl-shaped areas at its top, which are called calderas. These calderas formed when the ground collapsed after a big eruption. The last time this eastern volcano erupted was in 1937.
