Yunomi facts for kids
A yunomi (say "yoo-noh-mee") is a special type of Japanese teacup. It is usually tall and made from ceramic material, like clay that has been baked. Unlike many teacups you might see, a yunomi does not have a handle.
What is a Yunomi?
Yunomi teacups are often tall and have a small base. Because they do not have a handle, the cup can get warm quickly. People usually hold a yunomi with both hands to enjoy their tea.
These cups are different from the more formal chawan tea bowls. Chawan are used in the special Japanese tea ceremony. Yunomi, however, are made for everyday tea drinking. They are perfect for enjoying tea at home or with friends in a relaxed way.
Different Kinds of Yunomi
There are also special pairs of yunomi called meoto yunomi (say "meh-oh-toh yoo-noh-mee"). "Meoto" means "married couple" in Japanese. These sets usually have two cups that match. They might have the same design but in different colors.
One cup is usually a bit larger and the other is a bit smaller. The larger cup is sometimes called the "husband" cup, and the smaller one is the "wife" cup. These matching sets are a popular gift for weddings in Japan.
Yunomi as Art
Many artists who make pottery, both in Japan and other countries, create yunomi cups. These cups have become very popular with collectors. People enjoy collecting them because of their unique shapes, designs, and the different types of clay used to make them. Each yunomi can be a small piece of art!
