Taking Charge of Schools
The Yupiit School District started in 1984. Its main goal was to give local people more control over their schools. This meant that decisions about education would be made closer to home.
Some of the first goals for the district included:
- Learning about Yup'ik culture, skills, and values.
- Getting ready for college or future jobs.
- Being able to speak both the native Yup'ik language and English.
Later on, the district created a school plan based on the Yup'ik culture. A group of seven elected members leads the school district. They serve for three years at a time.
Learning About Yup'ik Culture
The school district offers special classes to help students learn about the Yup'ik culture. In elementary school, students can take classes where they learn in both Yup'ik and English. Older students in middle and high school can take classes focused on Yup'ik studies and the Yup'ik language.
Students also learn important traditional skills. These include things like fishing in the traditional way, hunting caribou, and even dog-mushing. Students at the Tuluksak school even compete in dog-mushing races!
Our Schools
