Yuri Nikolayevich Glazkov (Russian: Ю́рий Никола́евич Глазко́в; 2 October 1939 – 9 December 2008) was a brave Soviet cosmonaut and a high-ranking officer in the Soviet Air Force. He reached the rank of major general in the Russian Air Force. Glazkov is remembered for his important space mission and his work training other cosmonauts. He also wrote interesting books, including science fiction stories.

Becoming a Cosmonaut

Yuri Glazkov was born in Moscow, which was then part of the USSR. He studied engineering and graduated from a military school in 1962. After his studies, he became a flight engineer in the Soviet Air Force.

In 1965, Yuri Glazkov was chosen to become a cosmonaut. This was a very special group of people who trained to travel into space. He worked hard and prepared for his chance to fly among the stars.

His Space Mission

Yuri Glazkov flew into space on the Soyuz 24 mission. He served as the flight engineer for this important journey. The mission lasted for 17 days, 17 hours, and 25 minutes. It was a big step for space exploration.

After his successful mission on Soyuz 24, Yuri Glazkov was given a very high honor. He was named a Hero of the Soviet Union. This award recognized his courage and achievements in space.

After Spaceflight

Yuri Glazkov retired from being an active cosmonaut in 1982. However, he continued to work in the space program. He earned a special degree in technical sciences in 1974.

Later, in 1989, he became a top leader at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. This is where future cosmonauts learn everything they need for space travel. He helped train many new space explorers until he retired in 2000.

Author and Writer

Yuri Glazkov was also a talented writer. He wrote several books about space. One of his books was a guide for spacewalking, called Outside Orbiting Spacecraft. He also wrote The World Around Us, which was about space exploration.

Besides non-fiction, Glazkov wrote exciting science-fiction novels. One of his novels, called "Чёрное безмолвие" (The Black Silence), was published in 1987. Another cosmonaut, Vladimir Dzhanibekov, even drew pictures for it!

Yuri Glazkov passed away in 2008. He is remembered as a dedicated cosmonaut, a leader, and a writer. He was survived by his wife, Lyubov, and their two children.
