Yusuf Idris (Arabic: يوسف إدريس) was a famous Egyptian writer. He was born on May 19, 1927, and passed away on August 1, 1991. He wrote many plays, short stories, and novels.
Yusuf Idris was born in Faqous, Egypt. He first studied to become a doctor at the University of Cairo. He wanted to create a new kind of Egyptian theater. This theater would use popular traditions and old stories from Egypt. His most famous play, "Al-Farafeer" (الفرافير), was a big success. It showed two main characters: the Master and the Farfour, who was a poor, ordinary person. For some time, he also wrote regularly for the well-known daily newspaper Al-Ahram.
While he was a medical student, Yusuf Idris was very active. He spoke out against the government at the time. After he finished his studies, he worked at Kasr el Eini. This was the biggest government hospital in Egypt. He supported the new leader, Nasser, at first. But he later changed his mind about the government around 1954. This was when his first collection of stories, The Cheapest Nights, was published. Yusuf Idris's stories show his own rebellious life. He stayed in touch with poor people. This helped him write about characters in a sensitive and imaginative way.
