Yves Robert (born June 19, 1920, died May 10, 2002) was a talented French artist. He was an actor, a writer for movies, a director who guided films, and a producer who helped make them happen.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Yves Robert was born in Saumur, a town in France. When he was a teenager, he moved to Paris. He wanted to become an actor. He started by performing in plays for free in different theater groups.

Before acting, from age 12 to 20, he worked as a typographer. This job involved setting up text for printing. In his early twenties, he studied mime, which is a type of acting without words. In 1948, he appeared in his first movie, Les Dieux du dimanche. Soon after, he began writing movie scripts, directing films, and even producing them.

Directing Famous Comedies

Yves Robert directed many successful comedy films. He often wrote the screenplays for these movies himself.

Award-Winning Films

His 1962 film, La Guerre des boutons, was a big hit. It won France's Prix Jean Vigo, a special award for young directors. In 1972, he directed Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire. This movie won the Silver Bear award at the 23rd Berlin International Film Festival in 1973.

His 1976 film, Un éléphant ça trompe énormément, became famous around the world. His wife, Danièle Delorme, starred in it. Many actors also think his 1973 comedy, Salut l'artiste, truly shows the challenges actors face. In 1977, he directed another comedy called Nous irons tous au paradis. This film was nominated for a César Award for Best Film, which is like France's Oscars.

Directing Dramatic Stories

In 1990, Yves Robert directed two serious films. These were My Mother's Castle and My Father's Glory. Both films were based on true stories from the life of writer Marcel Pagnol. These two movies were voted "Best Film" at the 1991 Seattle International Film Festival. They also received great reviews from critics.

Over his career, Yves Robert directed more than 20 feature films. He also wrote about the same number of scripts. He acted in over 75 movies. Even though his last main acting role was in 1980, he continued to act in smaller parts until after 1997.

Personal Life and Legacy

Yves Robert acted alongside Danièle Delorme in a play called Colombe in 1951. They got married in 1956. In 1961, they started their own film production company called La Guéville. This company also released several films by the comedy group Monty Python and director Terry Gilliam. This helped French audiences discover their work.

Yves Robert passed away in Paris on May 10, 2002, due to a brain hemorrhage. He was buried in Montparnasse Cemetery. His tombstone reads, "A man of joy..." Visitors often leave colorful buttons there. He was survived by his wife Danièle and two children from his first marriage, Anne and Jean-Denis Robert. The Cannes Film Festival that month honored his important work in French cinema.
