Yvette Denise Lee Bowser, born on June 9, 1965, is an American television writer and producer. She is well-known for creating the TV show Living Single. With this show, Yvette Bowser made history. She became the first African-American woman to create her own TV series that aired during primetime. Primetime is when most people watch television.

Yvette Bowser's Career in Television
Starting Out in TV Production
Yvette Bowser began her career in television in 1987. She started as an apprentice on the show A Different World. An apprentice learns from experienced people. Over time, she became more important in the production team. By the 1991–92 TV season, she was a producer for the show. After that, she moved to work on another show called Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.
Creating Her Own Stories
Yvette Bowser later started her own company, Sister Lee Productions. This company helped produce her shows, like Living Single and Half & Half. She has shared that she gets many ideas for her characters and stories from her own life. She also uses experiences from her friends. She once said, "I just basically rip pages out of my diary to tell stories on TV."
For example, the characters Mona and Dee-Dee in Half & Half were based on Yvette and her older half-sister. The show's ideas came from her own experience. She was the youngest child in a blended family. A blended family is when parents with children from previous relationships come together.
Recent Projects
Through Sister Lee Productions, Yvette Bowser was a showrunner for the Netflix series Dear White People. A showrunner is the main person in charge of a TV show. This series was based on a movie with the same name. In 2020, she also became the showrunner for the Starz series Run the World.

Early Life and Education
Yvette Denise Lee was born in Philadelphia in 1965. She lived there until she was five years old. Then, she and her mother moved to California. Yvette graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1983. She went to school with Holly Robinson Peete, who later acted in Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. She also went to school with her friend Lori Petty. Yvette later cast Lori Petty in her TV show Lush Life.
After high school, Yvette attended Stanford University. In 1986, she joined the Xi Beta chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. A sorority is a social organization for women in college.
Family Life
Yvette Lee married producer Kyle Bowser in 1994. They have worked together on several TV shows. These include Living Single, Half & Half, and For Your Love.
