Yvette Lee Bowser (born in 1965) is a talented American TV writer and producer. She is famous for creating the popular show Living Single. Early in her career, she worked on A Different World, a spin-off from The Cosby Show. With Living Single, Yvette made history. She became the first African-American woman to create her very own TV series for primetime.

Yvette Bowser's TV Career

Yvette Bowser started her TV journey in 1987. She began as an apprentice on the show A Different World. Over the years, she worked hard and moved up. By the 1991–92 season, she became a producer for the show. Later, she left A Different World to work on Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.

Creating Her Own Shows

Yvette Bowser then started her own company called Sister Lee Productions. This company helped produce her later hit shows. These included Living Single and Half & Half. Yvette has shared that she gets many ideas for her characters and stories from her own life. She also gets ideas from her friends' experiences. She once said, "I just basically rip pages out of my diary to tell stories on TV." For example, the characters Mona and Dee-Dee in Half & Half were based on Yvette and her older half-sister. The show's plots came from her own experiences growing up in a blended family.

Recent Work in Television

Through her company, Sister Lee Productions, Yvette Bowser was a showrunner for the Netflix series Dear White People. A showrunner is like the main boss of a TV show. This series was based on a movie by Justin Simien. In 2020, she also became the showrunner for the Starz series Run the World. This show was created by Leigh Davenport.
