Early Life and Education
Yvonne Holley grew up in Raleigh. Her father, J.D. Lewis, was a well-known person on WRAL-TV.
She went to William G. Enloe High School. After high school, she studied at Howard University. In 1974, she earned a degree in political science and government.
Her Career in Public Service
Before becoming a state representative, Yvonne Holley worked for the state of North Carolina. She was a specialist in buying and managing contracts for the North Carolina Department of Administration.
In 2020, Governor Roy Cooper chose Holley to join a special group. This group was called the Andrea Harris social, economic, environmental, and health equity task force. It worked to make things fair for everyone in North Carolina.
Running for Lieutenant Governor
In 2020, Yvonne Holley decided to run for lieutenant governor of North Carolina. This is the second-highest elected job in the state.
She won the first round of voting, called the Democratic primary, on March 3, 2020. She got the most votes, but not quite enough to avoid a possible second vote. However, the person who came in second place decided not to ask for another vote. This made Yvonne Holley the official Democratic candidate.
During her campaign, Holley talked about her "Affordable Living Initiative" (ALI). This plan aimed to help communities in North Carolina. It would bring together different groups like:
- Public and private businesses
- Non-profit organizations
- City and country governments
- Lawmakers
- Environmental groups
- Home builders
- Everyday citizens
The ALI plan focused on important needs such as:
- Finding homes that people can afford
- Getting healthy and affordable food
- Creating jobs that pay enough (living wages)
- Helping people start their own businesses
- Improving transportation
In the main election, Yvonne Holley ran against the Republican candidate, Mark Robinson. She lost the election, with Robinson getting 51% of the votes and Holley getting 48%.
