Yüksekova (also known as Gever in Kurdish and Gāwār in Syriac) is a city in Turkey. It is located in the Hakkâri Province and is the biggest city there. Yüksekova is home to many different groups of people. Most residents are Kurds, but there is also a large group of Turkish residents. In the past, many Assyrian Christians lived here too. In 2023, about 84,800 people lived in Yüksekova.

In 2019, Remziye Yaşar from the Peoples' Democratic Party was chosen as the mayor. Later that year, she was replaced by someone appointed by the central government.

What's in a Name?

Yüksekova has an interesting history behind its name. It used to be called Dize, which means "fortress" in Kurdish.

The name Yüksekova means 'plateau' or 'high plain' in Turkish. This name came from the original Kurdish name, Gever. Gever means 'raised meadow'. In the Armenian language, the word Gever can mean a type of administrative area, like a district. In the Persian language, it refers to followers of Zoroastrianism, an ancient religion.
