Yūki Yamato's Early Life and School

Yūki Yamato was born in 1989 in Kariya, Aichi, Japan. When she was studying philosophy at Sophia University, she joined the school's film club. This is where she made her very first movie!

Her first film was called That Girl is Dancing by the Seaside (あの娘が海辺で踊ってる). It came out in 2012. The movie was about two high school girls and their summer adventures. This film even won a special award at the Tokyo Student Film Festival.

Yūki Yamato's Career in Film

Yūki Yamato wrote and directed her first big movie in 2014. It was called Count Five to Dream of You (5つ数えれば君の夢, Itsutsu Kazoereba Kimi no Yume). This film starred the members of a Japanese idol group called Tokyo Girls' Style. They played students getting ready for a school festival. Because of her great work on this movie, Yūki Yamato won the Best New Director award at the 24th Japan Film Professional Awards.

Directing Music Videos

Yūki Yamato has also directed many music videos for famous Japanese artists. She directed videos for Nogizaka46 members, including Nanase Nishino's solo song "Gomen ne, zutto." She also directed the video for the Nogizaka46 song "Harujion ga Sakukoro." Other music videos she directed include "Hikari" by Radwimps and "Sweet Wanderer" by Momoiro Clover Z.

Adapting Manga into Movies

In 2016, Yūki Yamato directed a movie called Oboreru Knife (溺れるナイフ). This film was based on a popular Japanese comic book (manga) called Drowning Love by George Asakura. She chose to make this story into a movie because she felt many young girls could understand and relate to the main character's experiences.

Her next major film was Hot Gimmick: Girl Meets Boy, released in 2019. Yūki Yamato wrote and directed this movie too. It was based on another manga, Hot Gimmick, by Miki Aihara. The story is about a teenager who faces challenges from a powerful executive's son. The main actress in the film, Miona Hori, was also a member of Nogizaka46. Yūki Yamato had met her while directing the music video for "Harujion ga Sakukoro."

21st Century Girl Project

In the same year, 2019, Yūki Yamato also helped create a special project called 21st Century Girl (21世紀の女の子). This was a collection of short films made by female directors who were born in the 1980s and 1990s. She organized and produced this exciting anthology.
