History of Zacatecoluca
An earthquake in 1932 caused a lot of damage to the city.
Zacatecoluca is famous as the birthplace of José Simeón Cañas. He was a very important person in Central America. In 1825, he worked hard to free all slaves from Spanish rule.
Many old Spanish buildings are still in Zacatecoluca. One important building is the Santa Lucia Catholic Church. José Simeón Cañas used to live in a house here. Sadly, his old house was later replaced by a supermarket. Today, only a small stone marks where his home once stood.
The Santa Lucia Catholic Church has a special story. People believe an image of Virgin Mary inside the church stopped a volcano eruption. This eruption was sending lava and ash towards the city. On May 11, 1844, Zacatecoluca was given the title of "Generous and Loyal City." It became the main city of La Paz Department on February 21, 1852.
