The Story of Zagarzazú
The resort was founded by a person named Isidro "Chiquito" Zagarzazú. You can find a statue honoring him at the end of the road leading to the beach.
Zagarzazú International Airport
Just east of the resort is the Zagarzazú International Airport. This airport was built at the same time as the resort by Isidro Zagarzazú himself. Later, he gave the airport to the city of Carmelo so it could become an international airport.
Airport Traffic
In 2009, the airport was quite busy. About 20 private planes landed there each day. These planes brought people who came to play golf or stay at the Four Seasons Hotel. There have been discussions about making it a domestic airport again to help increase flights to the nearby Colonia Airport.
Enjoying Zagarzazú Beach
The beach at Zagarzazú is very pretty. It reminds many people of the beaches along the Costa de Oro in the Canelones Department. However, Zagarzazú's beach usually has fewer visitors, making it a peaceful place to relax.
