Zamarramala is a small village in Spain. It is located in the region of Castile and León, near the city of Segovia. The village sits on a hill, so you can easily see it from Segovia. Zamarramala used to have its own local government. However, in the 1970s, it became part of the larger city of Segovia.
The Santa Águeda Festival
Zamarramala is famous for its special celebration called the Fiesta de Santa Águeda. This festival is so important that it was named a "Fiesta of National Tourist Interest" in 1972. This means it is a very important cultural event in Spain.
History of the Festival
The Las Águedas festival happens every year on February 5th. It is one of the oldest festivals in Spain. People have been celebrating it since at least 1227. The festival remembers the bravery of the women of Zamarramala. Legend says these women helped to take back the Alcázar of Segovia. This was a very important castle that had been taken by another group.
How the Festival Works
During the festival, two women are chosen to be "mayors" for two days. They get to lead the village during this special time. Most of the people who take part in this festival are women. It is a unique way to celebrate their history and strength.
