Zandria Felice Robinson (born June 11, 1982) is an American writer and scholar. She studies popular music, different cultures, and how race and culture connect in the American South. She has written two books: This Ain't Chicago: Race, Class, and Regional Identity in the Post-Soul South (2014) and Chocolate Cities: The Black Map of American Life (2018). Robinson is currently a professor at Georgetown University.

Early life and education

Zandria Robinson was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in the East Whitehaven Park area of the city. She earned her first two degrees, a bachelor's and a master's, in sociology from the University of Memphis. Later, she received her doctoral degree, also in sociology, from Northwestern University.

Career highlights

After finishing her studies, Robinson returned to Memphis. She worked briefly at the University of Memphis. Then, she taught for three years at the University of Mississippi. Robinson later went back to the University of Memphis, where she taught for six years. In 2015, she accepted a new job at Rhodes College. Since 2019, she has been an associate professor in the African-American studies department at Georgetown University.

Robinson's first book, This Ain't Chicago: Race, Class, and Regional Identity in the Post-Soul South, was published in 2014. In this book, she interviewed African Americans living in Memphis. She showed how Black people have been important in shaping modern southern culture. The book also looked at how ideas about Black identity are sometimes seen through a "northern lens." She received an award for this book.

Her second book, Chocolate Cities: The Black Map of American Life, was co-written with Marcus Anthony Hunter. It was published in 2018. The authors explain how Black people and their culture have greatly influenced American culture. They describe this as creating a "Black map" of the United States.

Robinson also contributed to a book called New Daughters of Africa. This collection of writings was put together by Margaret Busby in 2019.

A misunderstanding about her job

In 2015, there was a misunderstanding about Zandria Robinson's job at the University of Memphis. Some of her online comments caused a stir. The university then announced that she was no longer working there. Many people thought she had been fired. However, it was later clarified that Robinson had already accepted a position at another university before the announcement was made. The University of Memphis had not included this information in their first statement.

Personal life

Zandria Robinson married artist and musician Marco Pavé in 2018. She has two children. Her daughter, Assata, was born in 2009 from a previous relationship. Her son, Jordan, was born in 2014.
