Zaragoza is a town and area (called a municipality) in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is located about 297 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Xalapa, which is the state capital. Zaragoza is also about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of the city of Minatitlán.

Geography of Zaragoza
The municipality of Zaragoza is located on a flat coastal plain in southern Veracruz. It shares borders with other municipalities. To the east and south, it borders Cosoleacaque. To the west, it borders Jáltipan. To the northwest, it borders Oteapan.
The total area of Zaragoza is about 264 square kilometers (102 square miles). This makes up a small part, about 0.03%, of the entire state of Veracruz. The land in Zaragoza is mostly flat. It has a lot of pastureland (51%), which is land used for grazing animals. Farmland makes up 36% of the area. The remaining 14% is made up of built-up areas, like towns and buildings. Zaragoza is also part of the Coatzacoalcos River basin, which means rivers and streams in the area flow into the Coatzacoalcos River.
Climate in Zaragoza
Zaragoza has a humid climate. This means it gets rain throughout the entire year. The average temperatures in the municipality are usually between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius (75 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). The average amount of rain each year is between 1900 and 2100 millimeters (75 to 83 inches).
History of Zaragoza
It is believed that a group of Popoluca people from Oteapan started a settlement here in the early 1800s. This place was first called San Isidro Xumuapan. Zaragoza officially became a municipality on December 1, 1868. It was part of the Minatitlán area in the state of Veracruz. Later, on January 15, 1918, it became a free municipality, meaning it had more independence in its local government.
How Zaragoza is Governed
The local government of Zaragoza is made up of a few important people. There is a president, who is like the mayor. There is also a councillor (called a síndico in Spanish) and a trustee (called a regidor). These people work together to manage the municipality. The current president of Zaragoza is Minerva Martínez Ramírez.
People and Population (Demographics)
In the 2010 Mexican Census, the municipality of Zaragoza had a population of 10,720 people. These people lived in 2,393 households. A survey in 2015 estimated that the population grew to 11,354 people.
Many people in Zaragoza have Indigenous roots. About 93.58% of the people reported having Indigenous ancestry in 2015. Also, about 11.45% of the people reported having African ancestry. In the 2010 Census, 3,401 people, or 32% of the population, spoke an Indigenous language. Most of these people, 3,341 of them, spoke the Nahuatl language.
There are 18 smaller communities (called localities) within the municipality. Only the main town, which is also called Zaragoza, is considered an urban area. In the 2010 Census, this main town had 9,639 people living in it. The 2020 Mexican Census showed that the total population of Zaragoza municipality was 11,899 people. Of these, about 52.63% were female and 47.37% were male.
Economy of Zaragoza
The economy of Zaragoza involves several activities. Many people who live in Zaragoza work in nearby cities. These cities include Minatitlán, Jáltipan, or Cosoleacaque. They often work in the service industry, which means jobs like retail, restaurants, or other services. Some also work for companies related to Pemex, which is Mexico's state-owned oil company. Raising pigs and cattle (farm animals) also helps the local economy.
