Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Zazen is a special kind of meditation that comes from Zen Buddhism. The word "Zazen" means "seated meditation." It's a way to calm your body and your mind. When you practice Zazen, you sit still and focus on your breath. This helps you become more aware of yourself and the world around you.

What is Zazen?

Zazen is a core practice in Zen Buddhism. It is not just about relaxing. It's also about understanding your own mind. People who practice Zazen try to be fully present in the moment. They learn to observe their thoughts without getting carried away by them.

The Goal of Zazen

The main goal of Zazen is to achieve a state of clear awareness. This state is sometimes called "enlightenment" or "satori." It means seeing things as they truly are. Zazen helps you find inner peace and reduce stress. It can also improve your focus and concentration in daily life.

How to Practice Zazen

Practicing Zazen involves specific postures and ways of focusing. It is usually done sitting on a cushion called a zafu. You might sit on a mat called a zabuton underneath.

Sitting Posture

There are several ways to sit during Zazen:

  • Full Lotus Position: Both feet rest on the opposite thigh. This is a very stable but difficult position.
  • Half Lotus Position: One foot rests on the opposite thigh. This is easier than full lotus.
  • Burmese Position: Both legs are crossed, with both feet resting on the floor in front of you.
  • Seiza Position: You kneel with your bottom resting on your heels. A small bench or cushion can be used for comfort.

No matter how you sit, your back should be straight. Your chin should be slightly tucked in. Your hands usually form a special shape called a mudra. Often, one hand rests on top of the other, with thumbs lightly touching.

Breathing and Focus

During Zazen, you focus on your breath. You breathe slowly and deeply from your belly. You don't try to control your breath too much. Instead, you just notice it as it goes in and out.

Your eyes are usually kept slightly open. You look softly at the floor in front of you. If thoughts come into your mind, you simply notice them and let them go. You don't chase after them or try to push them away. This helps train your mind to be calm and clear.

History of Zazen

Zazen has a long history. It began in ancient India with the teachings of Gautama Buddha. Over time, these teachings traveled to China. In China, this form of meditation became known as Chan Buddhism.

From China to Japan

Around the 12th and 13th centuries, Chan Buddhism was brought to Japan. In Japan, it became known as Zen Buddhism. Many famous Zen masters taught Zazen. They believed it was the most direct way to understand the Buddha's teachings. Today, Zazen is practiced by millions of people around the world. It is popular not only in Buddhist temples but also in meditation centers and homes.
