Zdeněk Svěrák (born March 28, 1936) is a famous Czech actor, writer, and humorist. He is one of the most loved and well-known people in Czech culture. Since 1968, he has acted in many movies, making people laugh and think.

His Amazing Career
Zdeněk Svěrák finished his studies in 1958 at Charles University in Prague. He studied the Czech language and literature. He has written more than 300 songs and plays! He has also appeared in 32 feature films.
Some of the movies he wrote scripts for are super famous. Two of them, Kolya and The Elementary School, even won an Academy Award! His son, Jan Svěrák, directed both of these films. Another popular movie he wrote is My Sweet Little Village.
Zdeněk Svěrák also helped create a funny, made-up character named Jára Cimrman. He did this with his good friend Ladislav Smoljak and radio colleague Jiří Šebánek in 1966. Jára Cimrman was so popular that people voted him "The Greatest Czech" in 2005! But he couldn't officially win because he wasn't a real person.
Besides his creative work, Zdeněk Svěrák also started a charity called Paraple. This organization helps people who are paralyzed.
Awards for His Writing
Zdeněk Svěrák has won three Magnesia Litera awards for his books. These awards are a big deal for writers in the Czech Republic.
- In 2004, he won the Readers' Choice award for his book Jaké je to asi v čudu.
- He won the same award again in 2012 for Nové povídky.
- His third Readers' Choice award came in 2014 for Po strništi bos.
In 1989, he was even a judge at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, which is a big international movie event.
