Life of Zenón Noriega
Zenón Noriega Agüero was born in Cajamarca, Peru, in the year 1900. His parents were Wenceslao Noriega and María del Carmen Agüero. He grew up to become an important figure in the Peruvian military.
Working with Manuel A. Odría
Noriega served as a close helper to Manuel A. Odría. Odría took control of the government in 1948 through a military coup. A coup is when a group, usually the military, takes power suddenly and often by force. Noriega was Odría's deputy, meaning he was second in command.
Becoming Interim President
On June 1, 1950, Odría decided to step down from his role as president. He did this so he could run for president in an upcoming election. In this election, Odría was the only person running. When Odría stepped down, Noriega became the president of the military government, or "Junta."
Noriega was the interim president, which means he was in charge for a short time until a permanent leader was chosen. He served in this role until July 28, 1950. On that date, Odría returned to power after winning the election.
After His Presidency
Even after Odría became the official president, Noriega continued to serve in the government. Odría immediately made him the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the head of the government, working under the president. Noriega held this position until August 1954.
He also served as the Minister of War, which means he was in charge of the country's military forces. In 1953, he was promoted to the rank of Major General in the army.
Later Years
In August 1954, Noriega was accused of planning to remove Odría from power. Because of this, he was sent away from Peru. This is called being "exiled." He traveled to Argentina, where he was welcomed by President Juan Domingo Perón.
Two years later, Zenón Noriega returned to Peru. He then left public life and retired. He passed away in 1957 at the age of 56.
