Zhang Tianfu (Chinese: 張天福; pinyin: Zhāng Tiānfú; Wade–Giles: Chang T'ien-fu, born September 21, 1910 – died June 4, 2017) was a famous Chinese scientist who studied plants, especially tea. He was an expert in how tea is made and was known for helping to make oolong tea popular. He also loved and knew a lot about tea.

Early Life and Education

Zhang Tianfu was born in Shanghai, China, on September 21, 1910. His parents were doctors who worked at a hospital. When he was very young, his family moved to Fuzhou, a city in Fujian province.

He started primary school at age seven and later went to Ko-Chih High School when he was 13. He then studied at Fukien Christian University. After his first year, he moved to the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nanking to study farming.

Career in Tea Science

After finishing his studies, Zhang Tianfu became a teacher at Fukien Christian University. He was very interested in tea. Between 1934 and 1935, he traveled to Japan and Taiwan to learn about how tea was grown and processed.

He later started an agricultural college and a special place to grow and improve tea plants in Fu'an. In 1936, he brought tea processing machines from Japan to China. This helped make the tea industry in China more modern and efficient. He continued to teach and later led the National Tea Research Institute in Chong'an county.

Later Life and Contributions

In the 1950s, Zhang Tianfu faced some difficult times and was sent away from Fuzhou. Even though he was in a challenging situation, he kept working on his scientific research. He was able to return to his work in 1980.

By the 1990s, he had finished writing an important book about oolong tea. He lived a very long life, passing away in 2017 at the age of 106. He is remembered as a key figure in China's tea industry.
