Zion Episcopal Church is a special old church building in Monroeville, Ohio. It was built a long time ago, in the 1860s. This church is famous for its unique style called Carpenter Gothic. Because of its interesting design, it has been named a historic site.

A Look at Zion Episcopal Church
Zion Episcopal Church stands out because of its special building style. It is made of wood, but it looks like the grand stone churches from the Gothic period. This style is called Carpenter Gothic.
Its Special Style: Carpenter Gothic
The church has walls made of "weatherboard," which are overlapping wooden boards. Its roof is covered with shingles. A very tall tower is a key part of its design. Many other churches built around the same time in Ohio looked different, often in a style called Greek Revival.
Zion Church also has unique windows. Instead of the usual pointed Gothic windows, its windows are angled and shaped like gables. You enter the church through double doors at the bottom of the tower. Above these doors, there is one large window and one smaller one.
At the very top of the tower, there is a belfry where the church bell would be. It has openings called louvers. Above the belfry, a cross-tipped steeple reaches towards the sky. The roof of the church is very steep and has gables at the front and back.
A Bit of History
The village of Monroeville was first planned in 1817. The first families who followed the Episcopal faith started meeting in 1843. However, it took eleven more years for them to officially form their own church group. The church building you see today was finally built in 1861.
A Historic Landmark
On May 3, 1974, Zion Episcopal Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings, sites, and objects in the United States that are worth preserving. The church was chosen because of its important and unique architecture. On the same day, two other buildings in Monroeville, the Seth Brown House and the John Hosford House, were also added to this list.
