History of Monroeville
Monroeville was first settled a long time ago, in 1817. Back then, it was simply called Monroe. The village got its name from James Monroe, who was the fifth President of the United States.
Later, the postal service changed its name to Monroeville to avoid confusion with other places. The village officially became an incorporated village in 1868. This means it gained its own local government.
