The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a special old building in Petoskey, Michigan. It is located at 810 Petoskey Street. Today, it is known as the Chapel of Our Guardian Angels. This historic church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This means it is an important building that is protected because of its history.
History of the Church Building
The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1892. It was made for the Zion Evangelical Church group to use. This group used the church building for many years.
In 1949, the Zion Evangelical Church group moved to a new church. Their new building was on US Highway 131. After they moved, another group bought the old church.
In 1951, the Petoskey Mennonite Church bought the building. This group later changed its name to the Hilltop Mennonite Fellowship. They used the church for many years too.
The Mennonite group used the building until 2015. After that, the group closed. Then, Colleen and Michael Pattullo bought the church. Now, it is called the Chapel of Our Guardian Angels. It works as a non-profit place. From 2016 to 2020, another group, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Petoskey, rented space there for their meetings.
What the Church Looks Like
The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a one-story building. It is made of wood. It has a style called Late Victorian. This style was popular when the church was built. It also has some parts that look like Gothic Revival buildings.
The church has a roof that comes to a point at the front. It also has a tall, skinny tower. The top of the tower is pointed and has many sides. The sides of the church have rectangular windows. These windows have eight small panes of glass. They also have decorative tops. There is an extra entrance at the back of one side of the building. This entrance has a pointed roof too.
