Zita is a place in Randall County, Texas. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a small area that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Zita was once a small, busy community, but over time, it has slowly faded away.

Zita: A Look Back

Zita was once a stop on the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway. This railway was very important for travel and trade in the early 1900s. Zita was located about ten miles northeast of a town called Canyon. It was also near the intersection of two farm roads, 335 and 1541.

How Zita Started

In the early 1900s, a small community began to grow around the railway station. People started to settle there, and soon, a school was built. This school was about three miles south of the railway switch.

The Zita Post Office

To help the growing community, a post office was opened in Zita on July 23, 1907. This was a big deal because it made it easier for people to send and receive mail. However, the post office only stayed open for five years before it was closed down.

The Zita School's Role

Even after the post office closed, the school remained very important. It wasn't just a place for learning; it also served as the main community center for Zita. People gathered there for events and to connect with their neighbors.

The school continued to operate for many years. Eventually, it closed when the Canyon Independent School District combined several schools. After the school closed, its building was taken down.

Why Zita Faded Away

Over time, Zita gradually disappeared as a community. This happened partly because nearby cities, like south Amarillo, started to grow a lot. As people moved to bigger towns, the small community of Zita slowly faded.

Today, you can still find records from the old Zita school. These important historical documents are kept safe in the archives of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. They help us remember what Zita was like in the past.
