Znaur Nikolayevich Gassiyev (Ossetian: Гасситы Никъалайы фырт Знауыр, Georgian: ზნაურ გასიევი, Russian: Знаур Николаевич Гассиев) was an important politician from South Ossetia. He was born on March 17, 1925, and passed away on March 6, 2016. Gassiyev was one of the main leaders in the movement for South Ossetia to become independent in the early 1990s. This movement led to the 1991–1992 South Ossetia War. He played a key role in the region's history during a very important time.

Znaur Gassiyev: A South Ossetian Leader
Early Life and Education
Znaur Gassiyev was born in Tskhinvali in 1925. When he was young, his family moved to Moscow, but they returned to Tskhinvali in 1935. He finished high school there in 1942.
After high school, he started studying Physics and Mathematics at the South Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute. However, his studies were interrupted when he joined the Soviet Army to fight in World War II from 1942 to 1944. After the war, he completed his studies in 1947. He then began his career as a teacher, teaching math and physics in different schools in Tskhinvali.
Starting a Political Journey
In 1951, Gassiyev moved to Tbilisi. He continued working as a teacher for four years. At the same time, he studied at the Mining Department of the Polytechnic Institute. He graduated with high honors in 1955. After graduating, he started working at the Mining Department in Kvaisa, where he held several different positions.
Gassiyev later entered the world of politics. His first political role was leading the industrial and transport committee of the Dzau district. In the early 1960s, he became the chairman of the Tskhinvali branch of the Georgian Communist Party. He also became the head of the city administration for Tskhinvali.
In 1963, he attended the Higher Party School, a special school for political leaders. He graduated with honors in 1965. From then until 1972, he served as the deputy chairman of the South Ossetian executive committee.
Leading South Ossetia's Parliament
Key Role in Independence
In 1991, when conflicts were starting in the region, Znaur Gassiyev was chosen as the first secretary of the South Ossetian Communist Party. He also became the head of the Supreme Council when South Ossetia declared its independence. As the chairman of parliament, Gassiyev was considered the Head of State of South Ossetia. In early 1992, he passed on his power to Torez Kulumbegov. Kulumbegov was a former chairman of the Supreme Council who had been held in Tbilisi by Georgian police.
Return to Parliament
After 1992, Gassiyev continued to be active in politics. He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the 1994 election. He was elected again in the 2004 election. In this election, he was part of President Eduard Kokoity's Unity Party. After the Unity Party won the election, Gassiyev was once again chosen as the chairman of Parliament.
Later Years and Legacy
After the 2008 South Ossetia war, Gassiyev was given an important job. He was appointed to lead the government's special group dealing with the emergencies that resulted from the war.
In 2009, Gassiyev was 84 years old and did not run in the 2009 election. Stanislav Kochiev took over his role as speaker of Parliament.
On October 27, 2010, Gassiyev was appointed as a State Advisor to President Eduard Kokoity. He passed away on March 6, 2016, at the age of 90.
