Zoneton: A Community's Name Story
Zoneton has an interesting story behind its name. This tale comes from an article written by Jeri Pitts in 1974. It tells us how the community got its unique identity.
How Zoneton Got Its Name
Back in 1875, the area that is now Zoneton was a quiet place. It had scattered farms and a few important buildings. These included a blacksmith shop, two schools, and some grist mills. There was also a general store, churches, and a post office.
Dr. J. R. Holsclaw was chosen to be the postmaster. His first big task was to pick a name for the area. At that time, the community didn't have an official name. Dr. Holsclaw thought a lot about what to call it.
One cold night, Dr. Holsclaw was riding his horse home. He had just visited a patient. He was traveling along Preston Highway, which was then called "The Pike." As he rode, he kept thinking about names. He looked down at Tanyard Branch, a small stream. The moonlight was shining through the bare tree branches. This created patterns of light on the water and the road.
The patterns reminded him of something, but he couldn't quite place it. He stopped his horse and looked closer. Then it hit him! The patterns looked like "zones" on a map. He knew right away that this was the perfect name. He decided to call the community Zoneton.
Dr. Holsclaw's choice was special because it was unselfish. Many people might have used their own name, like Holsclawburg. But he chose Zoneton, a name inspired by nature. It was an original and thoughtful way to name the community.
