Maria Àngels Garriga i Martin, also known as Àngels Garriga de Mata (1898–1967), was an important Spanish educator, teacher, and writer. She was born in San Vicente de Calders, Tarragona, and passed away in Barcelona. Àngels Garriga was also the mother of Marta Mata, who became a well-known politician and expert in education. Marta Mata worked hard to create good public schools for everyone in Spain.
Life of Àngels Garriga
Àngels Garriga was the daughter of Antoni Garriga i Torrents and Marta Martín Artigas. She married Josep Mata i Virgili. They had four children together: José, Marta, María, and Eulalia. Sadly, her husband passed away in 1934 due to a work accident, leaving her a widow at a young age.
Àngels Garriga began her teaching career at the Normal Studies Association of Catalonia. She taught there from 1920 to 1923. After that, she became a teacher for the city of Barcelona, working from 1923 to 1931. Later, she became a national teacher for the School Board of Barcelona after 1931.
After the Spanish Civil War ended in 1939, a new government took over. This government changed many things, including the school system. Àngels Garriga lost her job at the "Pedro Vila School Group" because of these changes. She then worked at the "Unitarian School Girls" until 1945, when she became paralyzed.
She retired from teaching in 1946. From 1946 to 1965, she lived with her daughter Marta Mata. They lived in a farmhouse that her late husband had left them. During this time, Àngels Garriga wrote many books. One of her most famous books was Beceroles, published in 1965. This was the first book to teach reading in Catalan after the war.
Today, the farmhouse where she lived is home to the Fundació Àngels Garriga de Mata. This foundation organizes many activities for schoolchildren. They also offer summer courses for teachers and hold seminars and conferences about education. The foundation has a large library with over 23,000 books. These books focus on the history of education in Catalonia and old teaching materials.
