Early Life and Music Journey
Angela Maria was born in Macaé, a city in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started singing in her church choir. Secretly, she began taking part in talent shows, including the well-known Ary Barroso Show on Radio Tupi. Later, she became a regular performer on Radio Mayrink Veiga.
In 1951, she recorded her first album with two songs: "I'm happy" and "When someone goes away." After this, Angela Maria became known as a great singer of "samba-canção." This is a popular Brazilian music style, and she sang alongside other famous artists like Maysa and Dolores Duran.
Big Hits and Acting Roles
Some of Angela Maria's most famous songs include "Babalu," "Lonely Girl," and "Ave Maria do Morro." She also acted in movies such as "Rio Zona Norte" and "Carnaval Barra Limpa."
In 1996, she released a successful CD called "Amigos" (Friends). This album featured many other big names in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), like Roberto Carlos and Maria Bethânia. It sold over 500,000 copies! Her last studio album, "Disco de Ouro" (Gold Record), came out in 2003.
The former Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas lovingly called her "Sapoti," which is a sweet fruit. This nickname stayed with her throughout her career. Angela Maria recorded a total of 114 albums and inspired many other singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento.
Later Years
Angela Maria passed away on September 29, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro. She was 89 years old.
