Đinh Xuân Lâm (born February 4, 1925 – died January 25, 2017) was a very important historian in Vietnam. He helped create the Department of Recent and Modern Vietnamese History. He was also a leader in the Vietnam History Science courses and a chairman for a scientific council related to history and culture.
Life and Work
Đinh Xuân Lâm was born in a place called Sơn Tân, which is in the Hương Sơn area of Hà Tĩnh province. His family had worked for the old Nguyễn Dynasty, which was a ruling family in Vietnam.
When he was young, he moved with his parents to Thanh Hoa province. He grew up there and thought of it as his second home. After finishing high school, he went to the National School of Hue. He studied literature and philosophy there. After the August Revolution in 1945, he became one of the first high school teachers in the new Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
In 1954, he joined the University of Pedagogy Humanities in his second year. He studied alongside other famous scholars like Phan Huy Lê. He did so well that he was asked to stay and teach history at the University of Hanoi.
Under the guidance of another important scholar, Mr. Tran Van Giau, Professor Lâm helped build the Department of Recent and Modern Vietnamese History. He wrote many textbooks and research papers for this department. Some of his early works included "Vietnam History 1897–1914" (written in 1957) and "Hoang Hoa Tham and Yen peasant movement" (written in 1958). He also wrote parts of "History of modern Vietnam" (from 1959–1961).
Professor Lâm was a great teacher. He helped more than 30 students from Vietnam and other countries finish their doctoral degrees. He also wrote over 200 scientific research projects.
Awards and Honors
Because of his hard work and knowledge, Đinh Xuân Lâm became an Associate Professor in 1980. Then, in 1984, he became a full Professor in history.
He was one of the first two historians in Vietnam to receive the special title of People's Teacher from the State Vietnam. This award is given to teachers who have made huge contributions to education. He also received the Medal labor class, which is another important award for his work.
