The Ōtaki River is a cool river located in the southwestern part of New Zealand's North Island. It starts high up in the Tararua Range mountains. This river flows for about 45 kilometers (28 miles) before it reaches the Tasman Sea. It's an important river for the area around Ōtaki.

Exploring the Ōtaki River

Where the River Begins and Ends

The Ōtaki River begins its journey in the Tararua Range, which is a mountain range. It flows southwest through a valley within these ranges. The river then turns northwest when it reaches an area called Ōtaki Forks. Here, another river, the Waiotauru River, joins it.

The Ōtaki River continues through the Ōtaki Gorge. It then crosses State Highway 1 (SH1) just south of Ōtaki town. Finally, the river flows into the Tasman Sea near the settlement of Ōtaki Beach.

How the River Shaped the Land

The Ōtaki River is one of the main rivers that helped create the rich, flat lands of the Kapiti Coast. These flat areas are called floodplains. They are very fertile, which means they are great for growing things.

Fun Activities at Ōtaki River

The Ōtaki Forks area is a very popular spot for people to visit. You can get there by driving along Otaki Gorge Road. This area is perfect for outdoor fun and is the starting point for many walking trails. These trails lead into the beautiful Tararua Range.

If you enjoy fishing, the Ōtaki River is a great place to go. You can find brown trout here. You might also catch whitebait, which are tiny, young fish.
