Álex Abrines (full name Alejandro Abrines Redondo) is a professional basketball player from Spain. He was born on August 1, 1993. Álex is the team captain for FC Barcelona, playing in Spain's top league, Liga ACB, and the EuroLeague.
He is 6 feet 6 inches tall and plays as a shooting guard or small forward. Álex has helped FC Barcelona win the Spanish League championship three times: in 2014, 2021, and 2023. In 2016, he was named the EuroLeague Rising Star, which is a special award for young players.
Álex started his basketball journey with CB Axarquía in 2010. He later joined Baloncesto Málaga and then moved to FC Barcelona in 2012. In 2013, he was chosen by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2013 NBA draft. After playing for FC Barcelona for a few more years, he joined the Thunder in 2016 and played in the NBA for three seasons. He returned to FC Barcelona in 2019.
He has also played for the Spanish national team since he was young. He won a bronze medal with Spain at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Álex Abrines's Basketball Journey
Starting in Spain (2010–2016)
Álex Abrines began his professional career in Spain. From 2010 to 2012, he played for teams like Clínicas Rincón and Unicaja. In July 2012, he joined the famous Spanish club, FC Barcelona.
On June 27, 2013, Álex was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA draft. He was the 32nd player chosen overall.
In May 2015, Álex signed a new contract with Barcelona. A year later, in May 2016, he received the EuroLeague Rising Star award. During his four seasons with Barcelona, he helped them win three major titles:
- One Spanish ACB league championship.
- One Spanish King's Cup.
- One Spanish Supercup.
He left Barcelona on July 19, 2016, to play in the NBA.
Playing in the NBA (2016–2019)
On July 23, 2016, Álex Abrines officially joined the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played his first game for the Thunder on October 26, 2016. He scored three points in a win against the Philadelphia 76ers.
On December 21, 2016, he scored 18 points, making five three-pointers, in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. This was his highest score at that time. On February 24, 2017, he started his first NBA game and scored 19 points against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Álex continued to improve. On December 9, 2017, he scored a career-high 20 points in a close game against the Memphis Grizzlies. On November 1, 2018, he scored 25 points, including five three-pointers, in a win over the Charlotte Hornets. Later that month, on November 30, he made a career-high seven three-pointers, scoring 21 points against the Atlanta Hawks.
On February 9, 2019, Álex and the Thunder decided to part ways. He left the team for personal reasons.
Back to Spain (2019–Present)
On July 12, 2019, Álex Abrines signed a new contract with FC Barcelona. He signed for two years, with a chance to play a third. On June 30, 2021, he extended his contract with the team until 2026.
In September 2021, Álex had a knee injury. He was unable to play for about four months while he recovered.
Playing for Spain
Álex Abrines has been a key player for Spain's national basketball teams. When he was younger, he played for the junior national teams.
- In 2011, he won a gold medal at the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. He was also named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and made the All-Tournament Team.
- In 2012, he won a bronze medal at the 2012 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship.
As an adult, he joined the senior Spain national basketball team.
- In 2016, he won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics.

Personal Life
Álex Abrines comes from a basketball family. His father, Gabriel Abrines, was also a professional basketball player in Spain. He played for five different teams between 1989 and 1999. Álex was born in Palma de Mallorca, the same Spanish city where his father ended his basketball career.
