Álex Abrines (born August 1, 1993) is a Spanish basketball player who used to play professionally. He played most of his career for FC Barcelona, a famous team in Spain and Europe. He was even a team captain for a while!
Álex is 6 feet 6 inches tall (1.98 meters). He mainly played as a shooting guard or small forward. He won three Spanish League championships with FC Barcelona in 2014, 2021, and 2023. In 2016, he won the EuroLeague Rising Star Award, which is given to the best young player in the EuroLeague.
Álex was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. He started his professional career in 2010 and played until 2025. He joined Baloncesto Málaga in 2011 and then moved to FC Barcelona in 2012. In 2013, the Oklahoma City Thunder picked him in the NBA draft. After playing more seasons with Barcelona, Álex joined the Thunder in 2016 for three years. He returned to FC Barcelona in 2019.
Álex also played for Spain's national basketball team. He won a bronze medal with Spain at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Álex's Basketball Journey
Starting in Spain (2010–2016)
From 2010 to 2012, Álex played for teams like Clínicas Rincón and Unicaja. In July 2012, he joined the well-known Spanish club, FC Barcelona.
On June 27, 2013, Álex was chosen by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA draft. He was the 32nd player picked overall.
In May 2015, Álex signed a new contract with Barcelona that would last until 2019. A year later, in May 2016, he was named the EuroLeague Rising Star. This award goes to the best young player in the EuroLeague. He played four seasons for Barcelona and helped them win three big titles: one Spanish ACB league championship, one Spanish King's Cup, and one Spanish Supercup. On July 19, 2016, Álex left Barcelona.
Playing in the NBA (2016–2019)
On July 23, 2016, Álex signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. He played his first game for the Thunder on October 26, scoring three points. On December 21, he scored 18 points, which was his highest score at that time. He made five three-pointers in that game.
On February 24, 2017, Álex started his first NBA game and scored 19 points, setting a new personal record. On December 9, 2017, he scored 20 points, which was another career high.
On November 1, 2018, Álex scored 25 points and made five three-pointers in a game. Later that month, on November 30, he scored 21 points and made a career-high seven three-pointers.
On February 9, 2019, Álex left the Thunder. He and the team decided to part ways for personal reasons.
Back to Spain (2019–2025)
On July 12, 2019, Álex signed a two-year deal to return to FC Barcelona. He had an option to stay for a third year. On June 30, 2021, he extended his contract with the team until 2026.
A few months later, on September 17, Álex got a knee injury and couldn't play for four months. On July 22, 2025, Álex announced on social media that he was retiring from professional basketball. He played a total of ten seasons for Barcelona, playing in 660 games and winning 15 titles.
Playing for Spain
Álex played for Spain's junior national teams. He won a gold medal at the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. He was also named the best player (MVP) of that tournament. In 2012, he won a bronze medal at the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship.
In 2016, Álex won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics with the main Spanish national team. He also played in the EuroBasket 2017 tournament.
