Ángel González Muñiz (born September 6, 1925 – died January 12, 2008) was a very important Spanish poet. He lived in the 20th century.
Ángel González was born in Oviedo, a city in Spain. He studied law at the University of Oviedo. In 1950, he moved to Madrid to work for the government.
In Madrid, he started writing and publishing his poems. He became friends with many famous Spanish writers. They encouraged him to continue his work.
His first book of poems was called Áspero mundo, which means "Harsh World." It was a big success right away. His second book, Grado elemental ("Elementary Grade"), was published in Paris. This book won the famous Antonio Machado Prize for Poetry.
He wrote many more poetry books. He also helped put together collections of poems by other writers. He wrote about literature too. Some of his books were translated into English. These include Harsh World and Other Poems and Astonishing World: The Selected Poems of Ángel González.
Awards and Recognition
Ángel González received many important awards. These awards honored his contributions to Spanish culture and poetry.
- He won the Angel María de Lera Hispanism Prize. This was for his work in Hispanic Culture. It came from the University of Colorado in the U.S..
- He also received the Príncipe de Asturias Prize from Spain. This is one of Spain's most important awards.
- He won the Salerno Poetry Prize from Italy.
- He was given the Premio Reina Sofía Iberoamericas Prize from Spain.
In 1997, he became the Chair of the Real Academia Española. This is a very important group that looks after the Spanish language. In 2004, he won the first Federico García Lorca Poetry Prize. This prize was given by the City of Granada.
His poems are in many major collections of 20th-century Spanish poetry. His work is also in the Vintage Book Of Contemporary World Poetry.
Teaching Career
Ángel González also shared his knowledge with students. He taught at the University of New Mexico in the United States. He taught there from 1974 to 1994. Before he passed away in January 2008, he spent his time between New Mexico and Spain.
His Works
Ángel González wrote many books of poetry. Some of his well-known Spanish titles include Aspero mundo, Grado elemental, and Palabra sobre palabra. His poems are loved for their unique style and deep meanings.
Some of his works were translated into English. These include Astonishing World, The Selected Poems of Angel Gonzalez and Harsh World and Other Poems. His poems have also appeared in many poetry collections from around the world.
