Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ælthelfreda (also known as Ælthelthryth or Ælthelflæd) was a very important leader at Shaftesbury Abbey around the year 1000. She was likely the abbess, which is like the head nun, in charge of the abbey and its community. During her time, a significant event happened involving the remains of a saint.

Who Was Ælthelfreda?

Ælthelfreda was a key figure at Shaftesbury Abbey, a famous religious place in England. As abbess, she would have been responsible for many things. This included managing the abbey's lands and looking after the nuns who lived there.

Moving Saint Edward's Relics

One of the most notable events during Ælthelfreda's leadership was the moving of the relics of Edward the Martyr. Relics are special objects, often the remains of a saint, that are kept and honored. Edward the Martyr was a king who had died earlier, and his relics were kept at Shaftesbury.

On June 20, 1001, these relics were moved. They were taken from one spot near the main altar to another special place inside the abbey church. This event was called a "translation."

Why Were the Relics Moved?

Historians believe this move might have been a response to the Viking raids happening in England at that time. The Anglo-Saxons, who were the people living in England, were worried about these attacks. They thought that by showing more respect to the relics of saints, they could gain God's favor and protection.

Interestingly, after the relics were moved, the Vikings who were attacking Devon stopped their raids. They stayed put for a while and then went back to their base on the Isle of Wight. People at the time might have seen this as a sign that their prayers and actions, like moving the relics, had worked.

Shaftesbury Abbey's Importance

Shaftesbury was one of several important churches built in the region of Wessex during the late Saxon period. Other similar places included Winchester Nunnaminster, Romsey, Wherwell, Amesbury, and Wilton. These abbeys were centers of learning, prayer, and community life.

In 1001, King Æthelred gave the town of Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire to the nuns of Shaftesbury. This gift was meant to provide a safe place for the nuns and the precious relics if there were more Viking attacks. It shows how important Shaftesbury Abbey and its abbess, Ælthelfreda, were considered at the time.
