The École nationale supérieure d'informatique pour l'industrie et l'entreprise, often called ensIIE for short, is a special public school in France. It focuses on computer science and applied mathematics. Think of it as a top-level engineering school, known as a grande école in France.

ensIIE is one of the 204 French engineering schools allowed to give out an engineering degree. This means its programs are officially recognized and meet high standards. The school was started in 1968 and is located in Évry-Courcouronnes, which is near Paris. It is overseen by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Since 2016, students usually get into ensIIE through a tough national exam called the Mines-Télécom entrance examination. ensIIE is also part of important groups like the Conférence des grandes écoles and is connected to the Université Paris-Saclay and the Institut Mines-Télécom.

ensIIE is one of the oldest computer science schools in France. It teaches students about computer science, math, and how businesses and money work. The school works closely with companies to make sure students learn what they need for real jobs.

What is ensIIE?

ensIIE is a school that trains future engineers. These engineers learn how to use computers and math to solve problems in different industries and businesses. The school helps students get ready for jobs in technology, finance, and more.

Programs Offered

ensIIE offers three main ways to get an engineering degree:

  • Full-time program (FISE): This is for students who come from special "preparatory classes" after high school.
  • Work-study program (FISA): This program is for students who have already studied at a University Institute of Technology (IUT). They split their time between studying and working at a company.
  • Continuing education program (FC): This is for adults who are already working but want to come back to school to learn new skills or get an engineering degree.

How Students Join ensIIE

Most students get into ensIIE through a very competitive exam called the Concours Mines-Télécom. Students usually prepare for this exam for two years after high school in special "preparatory classes." Before 2015, a different exam was used.

Students can also join ensIIE in other ways. Some come from different University Institutes of Technology (IUTs) or other universities across France. Also, many international students come to ensIIE through special agreements with their home countries.

History of ensIIE

ensIIE was founded in 1968 by Paul Namian. It was first called the Institut d'Informatique d'Entreprise (IIE) and was located in Paris. In the beginning, only about 30 students were in each class, but the school quickly grew.

In July 2006, the school changed its name to École nationale supérieure d'informatique pour l'industrie et l'entreprise (ensIIE). It became a public institution connected to the Université d'Évry-Val-d'Essonne.

Between 2009 and 2017, ensIIE had another campus in Strasbourg, but it closed because there wasn't enough money to keep it going. In 2015, the school joined the Mines-Télécom entrance exam, which is a big step for student admissions. In 2017, ensIIE officially became part of the Université Paris-Saclay and the Institut Mines-Télécom.

As of 2025, over 4900 engineers have graduated from ensIIE. These graduates, called "alumni," form a strong network that helps current students.

How Students are Admitted

Students can be admitted to ensIIE from various paths:

  • Concours Mines-Télécom: This is the main way, for students from different "preparatory tracks" (like MP, PSI, MPI, PC, and TSI).
  • Academic Qualifications: Students who have certain university degrees, like a Bachelor's degree (BUT/DUT, Licence), can also apply.
  • Second-Year Admission: It's also possible to join in the second year if you have a Master's degree (Master 1 / Master 2) or similar in computer science or math.

What You Study at ensIIE

The courses at ensIIE usually last for three years. In the final year, students can even choose to study at a university in another country, like the University of Manchester or Oxford University in the UK. Sometimes, this means they can get a degree from ensIIE and also a Master's degree from the foreign university!

ensIIE also has many partnerships with other international universities. Students can go to these universities for a part of their studies, even if it doesn't lead to a double degree.

First-Year Courses

In their first year, all students take the same core classes. These classes are divided into four main areas:

  • Digital Computer Science: Learning the basics of how computers work and how to program.
  • Applied Mathematics: Using math to solve real-world problems.
  • Economics and Management: Understanding how businesses operate and how to manage projects.
  • Personal Development and Languages: Improving communication skills, teamwork, and learning new languages.

These courses give students a strong foundation in science and the tools they need to become successful engineers. They help students keep up with the fast changes in the digital world.

Special Tracks in Second Year

After the first year, students can choose a special track to focus on what they are most interested in. Here are some of the exciting tracks:

  • Applied Mathematics Track: This track covers topics like how to make decisions using math, financial math, and machine learning (which is how computers learn from data).
  • Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Track: Students learn how to design and build computer programs, keep computer systems safe, and write secure code.
  • High-Performance Computing and Big Data Track: This track is about working with very large amounts of data and using powerful computers. It includes topics like cloud computing and quantum computing.
  • Video Games and Digital Interactions Track: This fun track, offered with Télécom SudParis, focuses on creating video games, augmented reality, and virtual reality.

Internships

Students at ensIIE get a lot of real-world experience through internships. They usually do about one year of internships during their studies, with one internship each year:

  • First Year: 8 to 13 weeks, focusing on programming and development.
  • Second Year: 10 to 13 weeks, working on designing and developing projects.
  • Third Year: 5 to 6 months, focusing on design, new technologies, and innovation.

Double Degrees

ensIIE offers cool opportunities to get two degrees at once!

Studying Abroad for a Double Degree

Students can spend part of their second or third year at a foreign university. This often leads to getting a degree from ensIIE and another degree, like a Master of Science (MSc), from the foreign university.

Double Degrees in France

  • Engineer - Engineer (ensIIE - Télécom SudParis): This program lets students get two engineering degrees. They learn about computer science from ensIIE and telecommunications from Télécom SudParis. Both schools are in Évry-Courcouronnes. This program is expected to start in September 2025.
  • Engineer - Manager (ensIIE - Institut Mines-Télécom Business School): After two years at ensIIE, students can spend two more years at the Institut Mines-Télécom Business School. This helps them get both an engineering degree and a management degree, which is great for leadership roles.
  • Entrepreneurship Major: Students can also choose a special program called "Innovation, Design and Committed Entrepreneurship" (IDEE). This program helps them learn how to create their own businesses.
  • Bachelor's Degree (L3): In their first year, many students also get a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Université d'Évry Paris Saclay. About 70% of first-year students achieve this.
  • Master 1 (M1) and Master 2 (M2): Students in the Applied Mathematics track can also get a Master 1 degree from Université Paris-Saclay. In their final year, some students can get a Master 2 degree in different specialized areas, like Artificial Intelligence or Quantitative Finance, while finishing their ensIIE degree.

Research at ensIIE

Many teachers at ensIIE are also researchers. This means they spend time doing scientific studies and making new discoveries. Their research focuses on areas like:

  • Using math to control financial systems.
  • Solving complex problems using combinations of things.
  • Checking if computer programs work correctly.
  • Learning from data using statistics.

This research happens in special laboratories that work with ensIIE.

Innovation and Starting Businesses

ensIIE encourages students to be creative and start their own businesses.

  • It has a special group called C-19 for video games and digital interactions.
  • It's part of an incubator called IMT Starter, which helps new companies grow.

Every summer, ensIIE offers a "SUMMER SCHOOL" program. This program brings together engineering and management students. They get to pretend they are young entrepreneurs and turn their ideas into new start-up companies.

Student Life

ensIIE has a lively student life with more than 50 clubs and associations. These groups cover many interests, from sports to arts, and some are even recognized nationally.
