Time with A.S. Roma
After playing well on loan, Roma bought Álvarez for €1.5 million. However, they immediately loaned him to another team, Messina. Messina had the option to buy him later for €1.9 million. Álvarez signed a five-year contract with Roma.
After playing for Messina during the 2006–07 season, Álvarez went back to Roma. Roma bought another player, Mauro Esposito, who played a similar position. Because there were too many right midfielders, Álvarez decided to leave Roma. He moved to Livorno on loan. Livorno also had an option to buy him for €2 million.
After playing for Livorno in the 2007–08 season, Álvarez returned to Roma again. He trained with the team for a full pre-season. But on September 1, 2008, he was loaned out once more. This time, he played for Pisa for the 2008–09 season.
Moving to F.C. Bari
In 2009, Édgar Álvarez joined Bari permanently. His first year with the team, known as pugliesi, went very well. Under coach Giampiero Ventura, Álvarez became one of the best wingers in Serie A. This is Italy's top soccer league.
