Club career
Playing for Peñarol
Édgar Álvarez was sometimes called El Mosky or El Jet Álvarez because he was so fast. When he was 24, he joined Peñarol, a famous team in Uruguay. Peñarol had just won the championship in 2003. Édgar was a key player for the coach, Diego Aguirre, on the right side of the field. Before this, he played for seven seasons with Deportivo Platense in his home country.
Time with A.S. Roma
After playing well on loan (meaning he was temporarily playing for them), AS Roma bought Édgar Álvarez for €1.5 million from Peñarol. However, Roma immediately sent him to Messina on another loan. Messina had the chance to buy him later for €1.9 million. Édgar signed a five-year contract with Roma.
After playing the 2006–07 season at Messina, Álvarez went back to Roma. But Roma had many players who played in his position. So, Édgar decided to leave and joined Livorno. Livorno also had an option to buy him for €2 million.
After the 2007–08 season with Livorno, Álvarez returned to Roma again. He trained with the team for a whole pre-season. But on September 1, 2008, he was loaned out once more, this time to Pisa for the 2008–09 season.
Moving to F.C. Bari 1908
In 2009, Édgar Álvarez permanently moved to Bari. His first year with Bari was very good. Under coach Giampiero Ventura, he became one of the best wingers in Serie A, which is Italy's top soccer league.
However, his second year with Bari was not as successful. The team finished last in the league and moved down to Serie B, a lower division. In total, Édgar played 65 league games for Bari over two years and scored 4 goals.
Playing for U.S. Città di Palermo
On August 31, 2011, Édgar Álvarez joined Palermo. He signed a two-year contract with this new club.
Joining FC Dinamo București
In July 2012, Édgar moved to Romania to play for Dinamo București in Liga I. He signed a one-year contract with them. Sadly, he only played five games for Dinamo because he had many injuries. His contract was ended by agreement in December 2012.
Playing style
Édgar Álvarez was well-known for how incredibly fast he was. He could run very quickly both with and without the ball. He was also very agile, meaning he could move and change direction easily. This made it very hard for other players to guard him during a game.
International career
Édgar Álvarez played for the Honduras national team. He was part of the team that played in the 1999 World Youth Cup. He played his first senior game for Honduras in 2001 against Panama. He came into the game in the second half.
By July 2012, he had played 51 games for his country, scoring 3 goals. He played in 10 FIFA World Cup qualification matches, trying to help Honduras get into the World Cup. He also played in several other tournaments, including the 2001 and 2003 UNCAF Nations Cups, and the 2003 and 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cups. Most importantly, he was part of the Honduras team that played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and he played in two matches there.
