Édgar Negret was a famous artist from Colombia who created amazing sculptures. He was born on October 11, 1920, and passed away on his 92nd birthday, October 11, 2012. Negret is best known for his unique abstract sculptures, which often looked like machines or geometric shapes.

Life of Édgar Negret

Édgar Negret was born in a city called Popayán, Colombia. He began his art journey at the School of Fine Arts in Cali, Colombia, starting in 1938. There, he learned from a teacher named Jesus Maria Espinosa.

Early Art Style

When he first started, Negret worked with stone. His early sculptures reminded people of famous European artists like Jean Arp and Constantin Brâncuși. These artists were known for their modern and simple shapes.

Working with Metal

By the early 1950s, Negret started to use metal in his art. He began creating sculptures in a style called Constructivism. This art style often uses geometric shapes and industrial materials to build new forms.

Awards and Recognition

Negret's art quickly gained attention. In 1955, one of his artworks was bought by the important Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This was a big step for his career.

In 1963, he won a major art prize called the Salón de Artistas Colombianos. This award helped him become one of the most important Colombian sculptors of his time. He also received the David E. Bright Sculpture Prize in 1968 at the Thirty-fourth Venice Biennial, a very famous international art show.

Later Years and Legacy

To honor his work, the Museum Negret opened in 1985, dedicated to his sculptures. In 2010, the Congress of Colombia gave him a special award called “Grado de Oficial.”

Édgar Negret passed away in Bogotá, Colombia, on his 92nd birthday. In 2016, Google Doodle celebrated what would have been his 96th birthday with a special drawing on their homepage.
