Édouard Dujardin (born November 10, 1861 – died October 31, 1949) was a French writer. He was one of the first to use a special writing style called stream of consciousness. This means showing a character's thoughts and feelings as they happen. His 1888 novel, Les Lauriers sont coupés, is a great example of this style.

About Édouard Dujardin

His Early Life and Education

Édouard Émile Louis Dujardin was born in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt, France. He was the only child of Alphonse Dujardin, who was a sea captain. Édouard went to school at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen.

When his parents passed away, Édouard inherited their money. He used some of this money to help pay for his plays. These plays included Antonia in 1891 and Le Chevalier Du Passé in 1882.

His Work as a Writer and Journalist

In 1886, Dujardin became the editor of a magazine called Revue Indépendente. His first writings were published in this magazine. People saw this magazine as an important place for writers who used a style called "symbolism."

Dujardin wrote many different things. He created plays, poems, and novels. He also wrote about books and society. The famous writer James Joyce said that Dujardin's way of writing inner thoughts influenced his own work. Dujardin continued to be involved in journalism throughout his life. Sometimes, his articles led to disagreements with authorities.

His Personal Life and Interests

Édouard Dujardin liked to dress very stylishly. He was known for spending time in Paris at night. He had many friends, including women who were involved in the arts. He even helped some of them financially.

Over time, his spending reduced his money. He then started different ways to manage his finances. This included investing in real estate. He also offered his skills to magazines for advertising.

In 1885, Dujardin and Téodor de Wyzewa started a magazine called Revue wagnérienne. This magazine was about the German composer Richard Wagner. It was published for three years, from 1885 to 1887. In 1886, Dujardin joined forces with Félix Fénéon for a new and improved Revue Indépendante. This magazine even started having small art shows in its rooms.

Dujardin married a woman named Germaine in 1893. They later separated in 1901. They did not get divorced until 1924. After that, he married Marie Chenou. She was thirty years younger than him. He was good friends with the Irish writer George Moore for a long time. They wrote letters to each other often.

In May 1922, he went to a meeting called the International Congress of Progressive Artists. There, he signed a statement to create a group for international artists.

Dujardin was interested in the idea that the story of Jesus might be a myth. He wrote a book about this called Ancient History of the God Jesus (1938). He had two children. He lived a quiet life when he was older. Édouard Dujardin passed away at 88 years old on October 31, 1949.
