Ümit Yaşar Oğuzcan was born on August 22, 1926, in a city called Tarsus in Turkey. He went to school in different cities like Konya and Eskişehir.
His Life and Work
After finishing his studies, Ümit Yaşar Oğuzcan started working at a bank called İş Bankası. He worked as an accountant first in Niğde and then in Ankara. Later, he became the vice public relations director for the bank.
He retired from the bank in 1977. After retiring, he opened his own art gallery in Istanbul. He passed away on November 4, 1984.
His Journey as a Poet
Ümit Yaşar Oğuzcan loved writing poems. His very first poem was printed in a magazine called Yedigün when he was still a student. He kept writing and published his first book of poems in 1947.
He wrote a lot! In total, he published 33 books of poetry. He also wrote 17 other books, including a travel book about his trips in Europe. Most of his poems were about love. But he also wrote funny poems that made fun of things, which are called satire poems.
When he first started writing, he was inspired by other famous poets like Faruk Nafiz Çamlıbel and Yahya Kemal Beyatlı. Later on, his style changed, and he began to follow the way Orhan Veli Kanık wrote his poems.
