About İsmail Metin Temel
İsmail Metin Temel was born in 1958 in the city of Adana, Turkey. His family moved to Adana in the 1970s. He decided to join the Turkish Army in 1981. This was the start of his long military career.
Early Career and Promotions
In 2012, Temel was given an important role. He became the Commander of the 3rd Tactical Infantry Division in Yuksekova Hakkari. Later, in 2016, General Temel was appointed Commander of the Second Army. Before this, he was the Commander of the Van Gendarmerie Public Security Corps.
Military Operations and Leadership
General Temel led two major military operations. These operations were part of Turkey's efforts in the Syrian Civil War. He played a key role in both of them.
Operation Euphrates Shield
The first operation he commanded was called Operation Euphrates Shield. This began in 2016. General Temel worked with another general, Lt. Gen. Zekai Aksakallı. Their goal was to help secure areas in northern Syria.
Operation Olive Branch
His second major operation was the Turkish military operation in Afrin, also known as Operation Olive Branch. This operation took place in 2018. It happened during a time when there were some disagreements between the Turkish and American governments. These disagreements were about who the United States was supporting in Syria.
Understanding the Conflict
The United States was supporting a group called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Turkish government believes that a part of the SDF, called the People's Protection Units (YPG), is linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK is a group that Turkey considers a threat to its security. Turkey was especially concerned when the U.S. planned to train a large border security force. Turkey felt this force could be a direct threat to its borders.
Later Role
After these operations, General Temel received a new assignment. On December 31, 2018, he was appointed to a role in the General Staff. This new position was in the Directorate of Audit and Evaluation.
