İstemihan Taviloğlu (born April 15, 1945 – died March 17, 2006) was a famous Turkish composer and music teacher. He is best known for his Clarinet Concerto. This piece was the very first clarinet concerto ever written by a Turkish composer. He also helped start the Musicology department at the Ankara State Conservatory. Many musicians who studied at conservatories in Turkey learned from him.
Early Life and Education
İstemihan Taviloğlu was born in Tekirdağ, Turkey, on April 15, 1945. He was the third child of Ahmet and Nuriye Taviloglu. His father, a school teacher, loved music and played the mandolin for fun. This love for music influenced young İstemihan greatly.
Soon after he was born, his family moved to Pasabahce, Istanbul. At age eleven, İstemihan started studying violin at the Istanbul Conservatory. After one year, he switched to the clarinet. His teacher was Tevfik Çelen.
In 1963, he moved to the Ankara State Conservatory. There, he continued his clarinet studies with Hayrullah Duygu. After graduating with honors as a clarinet player, he joined the Ankara State Opera as an orchestra member.
Becoming a Composer and Teacher
After playing in the orchestra for a few years, İstemihan decided to continue his education. He wanted to become a composer. He pursued his Master's and DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degrees in music composition and theory. His teachers included famous composers like Adnan Saygun and Erçivan Saydam. He also learned composition from Ilhan Usmanbaş and studied music theory with Muammer Sun.
Taviloğlu taught at the Ankara State Conservatory. He also taught at the Dokuz Eylül Conservatory in İzmir. He is remembered for teaching many talented musicians in Turkey.
Notable Compositions
İstemihan Taviloğlu wrote several important pieces. His most famous work is the Clarinet Concerto. It was a groundbreaking piece for Turkish classical music.

- Op. 1 One, Two, Three, Four, for orchestra, 1983.
- Op. 5 Sport, for orchestra, 1984. The first performance was by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in 1984.
- Op. 6 Five in One Place, 1984. This piece also had its first performance by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO).
- Op. 9 Suit, for orchestra, 1982. The Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) first performed it in 1993, with Tadeusz Strugala as the conductor.
- Op. 12 Clarinet Concerto, 1979. The Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) performed its first show on March 16, 1979. Gurer Aykal was the conductor, and Aykut Doğansoy was the clarinet soloist.
