Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (born April 12, 1985) is a famous chess grandmaster from Azerbaijan. He is known as one of the best chess players in the world. As of late 2023, he is the highest-rated chess player from Azerbaijan. His highest rating was 2820, which makes him one of the top six highest-rated players in chess history!
Mamedyarov has played in the Candidates Tournament several times. This tournament helps decide who will challenge the World Chess Champion. He won the World Junior Chess Championship twice (in 2003 and 2005). He also became the World Rapid Champion in 2013.
He won a gold medal at the 2012 Chess Olympiad with his team. He has also won the European Team Chess Championship three times with Azerbaijan (2009, 2013, 2017). Mamedyarov has won many other big tournaments, like the Tal Memorial and Shamkir Chess. In 2018, he won the Biel Chess Festival, even beating the World Champion, Magnus Carlsen.

About Shakhriyar
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov's parents are from the Zangilan District in Azerbaijan. In 1980, his family moved to Sumqayit, where Shakhriyar was born. His first chess teacher was his father. His father also taught him boxing for a while. Shakhriyar has two sisters, Zeinab Mamedyarova and Turkan Mamedyarova. They are both Woman Grandmasters in chess. Shakhriyar got married in July 2017.
Chess Career Highlights
In 2003, Mamedyarov won the World Junior Chess Championship. He won it again in 2005. This made him the only player to win this championship twice! His amazing play in 2005 helped him get invited to the Essent Tournament in 2006. He won that tournament and the one in 2007, which made him famous in the chess world.
In 2005, Mamedyarov played in the European Chess Club Cup. He had one of the best performances there. In 2006, he shared first place at the Aeroflot Open in Moscow. He also won the FiNet/Ordix rapid event that year. Later in 2006, he won the Essent Chess Tournament.
Mamedyarov has won many other events:
- In 2008, he won the Corsican Circuit rapid knockout.
- In 2009, he won the Mainz Ordix Open.
- In 2010, he shared first place at the President's Cup in Baku. He also shared first place at the Tal Memorial.
- In June 2013, Mamedyarov won the World Rapid Chess Championship. The next month, he won the Geneva Masters rapid event.
- In November 2014, he won the Tal Memorial for the second time.
- In June 2016, Mamedyarov won the 3rd Shamkir Chess Tournament. He beat top players like Fabiano Caruana to win.
- In April 2017, he won the Vugar Gashimov Memorial again.
- In July 2018, he won the Biel Chess Festival. He finished one and a half points ahead of Magnus Carlsen, the World Champion. He even beat Carlsen in one of their games!
- In June 2021, Mamedyarov won the Superbet Chess Classic tournament. Many other strong players were in this event.
World Championship Path
Mamedyarov has tried to become World Champion several times.
- In 2011, he played in the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2012. He lost in the first round.
- In the 2014 cycle, he qualified for the Candidates Tournament by doing well in the FIDE Grand Prix 2012–13. He finished fourth in that tournament.
- He did not qualify for the 2016 Candidates.
- In the 2018 cycle, he qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2018 by winning the FIDE Grand Prix 2017. He finished second in the Candidates, just one point behind the winner.
- He did not qualify for the 2020 or 2022 Candidates tournaments.
Team Chess
Mamedyarov has played for Azerbaijan in many team events.
- He played in the Chess Olympiads nine times between 2000 and 2018.
- He helped Azerbaijan win the gold medal at the European Team Chess Championship in 2009, 2013, and 2017. They also won bronze in 2007 and silver in 2011.
