Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (born April 12, 1985) is a chess superstar from Azerbaijan. He is a Grandmaster, which is the highest title a chess player can earn. He is known as Azerbaijan's top-rated chess player.

At his best, Mamedyarov had a rating of 2820. This amazing score makes him the sixth-highest-rated player in the history of chess. He has played in the Candidates Tournament, a special event to decide who will challenge the World Champion. He competed in 2011, 2014 (where he finished fourth), and 2018 (where he came in second).

Mamedyarov has won many important titles. He was the World Junior Champion twice, in 2003 and 2005. In 2013, he also became the World Rapid Champion, showing his skill in fast-paced games. He has also won three team gold medals for Azerbaijan at the European Team Chess Championship.

Personal Life

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov was born in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan. His first chess teacher was his father, who was also a boxer.

Chess runs in the family. Mamedyarov has two sisters, Zeinab Mamedyarova and Turkan Mamedyarova, who are also very strong chess players with the title of Woman Grandmaster.

Chess Career

Mamedyarov's journey to the top of the chess world is filled with exciting victories. He showed his talent early on and quickly became a famous player.

Becoming a Champion

In 2003, Mamedyarov won the World Junior Chess Championship. He won it again in 2005, becoming the only player to ever win this title twice. His performance was so good that it earned him an invitation to the Essent Chess Tournament in 2006, which he also won.

Over the years, he won many other tournaments:

  • 2006: He tied for first place at the famous Aeroflot Open in Moscow.
  • 2009: He won the Mainz Ordix Open.
  • 2010: He shared first place at the Tal Memorial, a tournament for the world's best players.
  • 2013: He became the World Rapid Champion.
  • 2016 & 2017: He won the Shamkir Chess tournament two years in a row.
  • 2018: He won the Biel Chess Festival, even beating the World Champion at the time, Magnus Carlsen.
  • 2021: He won the Superbet Chess Classic, a major tournament with many top players.

Playing for His Country

Mamedyarov has been a key player for the Azerbaijan national team. He has played in many Chess Olympiads, which are like the Olympics for chess.

He helped his team win the gold medal at the European Team Chess Championship three times, in 2009, 2013, and 2017. This shows he is not just a great individual player, but also a fantastic teammate.

World Championship Journey

Every top chess player dreams of becoming the World Champion. To do this, they must first win the Candidates Tournament. Mamedyarov has come very close.

  • 2011: He played in his first Candidates Tournament.
  • 2014: He finished in fourth place.
  • 2018: He had his best result, finishing in second place, just one point behind the winner.

Although he hasn't won the Candidates Tournament yet, his strong performances show that he is one of the best players in the world.
